Matt “Everybody Look at Me, I’m a Movement Conservative” Lewis had an interesting post on Sarah Palin, the fiscal conservative. So much in the news has been made of her regarding social issues, but it was fiscal issues that first made conservatives fall in love…as evident to all the quotes and stories Lewis provide that took place prior to her being announced as the vice-presidential nominee.
This was something that has bothered me for a while. I’m not really surprised by the MSM looking to start a culture war. That’s just what they do…like Mitt the Mormon or referring to Mike Huckabee as a “former pastor” instead of a “former governor.” Prior to being announced, most people talked aboot Palin in regards to reform, energy, and the economy. When she was introduced, she talked aboot reform, energy, and the economy. So the fact that five hours later all they were talking aboot on MSNBC was abortion and Jesus didn’t surprise me much.
What killed me was the McCain campaign, because you know what they didn’t have her talking aboot? Reform, energy, and the economy. She gave a speech on the energy ten days before Election Day. That’s it. They also never even had her give any speeches aboot social issues for that matter (save for one speech on the sanctity of life), but that’s beside the point. Most people are in agreement that the campaign dropped the ball in many, many, many different ways.
But what makes it frustrating is that, with everyone talking aboot the economy, she was the only one running with any kind of an economic background. Consider this…
1. As Governor of Alaska, she’s essentially the CEO of a company with a $11 billion operating budget, which is $11 billion more than the budgets Obama, Biden, and McCain have run combined.
2. Warren Buffet, a life long Democrat and a cat who knows thing or two aboot making that paper, is a huge fan and has been extremely impressed by her through all of their business dealings.
3. She was, prior to bring announced as McCain’s running mate, on the business channels all the time. So while MSNBC was calling her an idiot and a Jesus freak, CNBC was talking aboot what a great pick she was an how she has a good head for business.
4. Number of times she was interviewed by Larry Kudlow, conservative economist and one of her more prominent supporters (him and Newt were the top two) prior to the nomination? Five or six. Number of times she was interviewed by Larry Kudlow, CONSERVATIVE economist and one of her more prominent SUPPORTERS after the nomination? Zero.
Again, like I’ve been saying, Saran Palin has A LOT of work to do to appeal to independent voters if she wants to run again on the national stage. But to say that she’s nothing more than a darling of the religious nuts just simply is not true.
