Stealing a page from the “HBO 24/7″ series, the UFC and Spike TV will be premiering “UFC Primetime: St. Pierre vs. Penn” on January 14th. It will be a three week, behind the scenes look at Georges St. Pierre and BJ Penn as they prepare for their mega fight Jan. 31 at UFC 94.
I’ve actually been waiting for the UFC and Spike TV to do something like this, and was surprised they didn’t for Couture vs. Lesnar. The UFC’s “Countdown to…” specials usually rock. Doing a weekly series leading up to a big match seems like a no brainer…especially after seeing how well received the HBO series has been.
The fight will be for GSP’s welterweight title, with Thiago Alves and Kenny Florian next in line for their respective weight classes.
Of course, if you’re going to have a GSP vs. Penn megafight at 170, why not a GSP or Penn vs. Anderson Silva at 185? GSP has been toying with the idea, and Penn has fought at 185 before. I’m just sayin…
