This week I’ll be starting “The Forgotten Man: A New History of the Great Depression” by Amity Shales. The book looks at how a lot of what Franklin Delano Roosevelt did (like say, the New Deal) actually prolonged the Great Depression, and with everyone who worships at the altar of Obama saying we need a new FDR and a Newer Deal, it seems like a good primer for BAMalot (for balance, I’m also reading Tom Daschle’s “Critical: What We Can Do About the Health-Care Crisis.”)
That brings us to the return of Congress next week, and P.BAM’s $1 TRILLION stimulus package:
Even so, congressional Democrats are anxious to get the process started so that a vote can take place in the House as early as the week of Jan. 12. Pelosi announced yesterday that the first hearing on the plan will take place Wednesday.
So, with congress only getting back to work on the 7th, which give us at most nine days to debate $1TRILLION and read the bill (which goes into thousands of pages). This coming from the same Nancy Pelosi who said no more than two years ago, “So that’s what we have said – and I hope you would agree – that before Members vote on a bill there should be appropriate time for people to be able to read it.” Nine days doesn’t quite sound appropriate when were talking about $1 TRILLION, does it?
This is where Tom Coburn comes in.
Coburn (R-OK) has a reputation for stalling measures in the Senate, to the chagrin of members of both major parties, but what makes this the perfect situation for him to stand athwart history and yell “slow the fuck down,” is with the “Federal Funding Accountability and Transparency Act.” That’s a bill which requires all spending bills to be posted on the Internet with enough time for the American People to review and see where their money is going.
His co-sponsor of the bill? Sen. Barack Obama.
Two years ago, BAM (like Nancy Pelosi) was all aboot the transparency when it came to the dolla’ dolla’ bill and where our money was going. Sen. Coburn is uniquely positioned (with the possible help of John McCain, another co-sponsor of the bill) to call Obama out on this before we rush $1 TRILLION in new spending.
And yes, I’ve been purposely writing $1 TRILLION in all caps for the sake of emphasis.
UPDATE: As Allahpundit like to say, Nuance…
UPDATE DEUX: Speaking of spending, looks like BAM needs a new Commerce Secretary…
UPDATE TRES: That’s my MoFo!
