Get it? Jazz Singer? Cantor? Eric Cantor? A Jewish cantor? Maybe he’s a congressman who dreams of playing in a rock n’ roll band? Can’t you picture Joe Lieberman hearing he wasn’t invited to the Obama meeting and ripping a piece of his shirt?
Folks, these are the jokes. I don’t do impressions.
But seriously, P.E. BAM had a sit down with the leadership to discus his $1 TRILLION stimulus plan. Coming out of that meeting, newly elected House Minority Whip Eric Cantor, who was simply the cat’s pajamas in conservative circles before, has conservative hearts all a twitter after standing up for transparency. I give you Rob Bluey:
President-elect Barack Obama has talked the talk about government transparency. But will he walk the walk? House Republican Whip Eric Cantor (R-VA.) stole the spotlight on the issue yesterday when congressional leaders sat down with Obama to discuss his economic stimulus package…
This was a brilliant suggestion from Cantor and a savvy political move. Conservatives must hold Obama and his administration accountable for his transparency promises. While I’m skeptical of Obama’s sincerity (judging from his health care forums), the only way to keep him honest is to play offense…
I don’t really have an opinion on the $1 TRILLION stimulus without seeing the actual plan and where the money is going. Other conservatives are a lot more ideological than I am, and want no stimulus period. I just don’t like being expected to agree to something with a gun pointed to my head, and that if I don’t agree to give you $1 TRILLION today; I will singlehandedly cause Great Depression v2.0 tomorrow. That’s what they said aboot the paltry $700 Billion they asked us for a few months ago. How’s that worked out?
I’ve also never been of fan of the “do anything” approach our government likes to take, just to make it look like they’re doing something Out total debt in our first 200 years as a country just totaled $1 TRILLION (though I would fact check me on that). “Do anything” doesn’t impress me as much as someone taking the time to know what they’re doing in the first place. If you want $1 TRILLION, you can take longer than a week to discuss and/or debate it.
And with any plan to fix the economy, there needs to be someone who will stand up and tell the American people they need to change their behavior as well. Remember the stories aboot how we’re a day away from a recession…the same day lines were wrapped around the block of people who absolutely had to have the new iPhone the day it came out? When the media reported how people had to “spend less’ this year on Christmas gifts, did they really mean “over spend” less? Maybe people, instead of grossly overspending with money they don’t have, they only marginally overspent? While every politician brags aboot how many people they put in homes, are we going to get the caveat of homeownership…that you can afford, and only when you can afford it in the first place?
These are all questions we need to ask of our leaders and of ourselves before we agree to any more money, let alone…say it with me now…$1 TRILLION DOLLARS.
