Brock Lesnar and Randy Couture: Training Partners?

7 01 2009

So, Brock Lesnar is the UFC heavyweight champion, right? And he’s got the next biggest fight of his career in a few months (probably) against interim champion Frank Mir…who has already beaten him once. Most fighters would look to step up their game, and Lesnar is no different. That’s why he’s going to train with the guy he won the title from, Randy Couture.

Here’s Sherdog with the report:

Don’t be surprised to see Brock Lesnar and Randy Couture back in the cage together this year. This time they’ll be training partners, though.

UFC heavyweight champion Lesnar inquired about a visit to Xtreme Couture Mixed Martial Arts in Las Vegas when he spoke with the UFC Hall of Famer at UFC “Fight for the Troops” on Dec. 10 in Fayetteville, N.C. “I told him that would be fine,” said Couture, who lost his sixth career title to Lesnar at UFC 91 on Nov. 15 in Las Vegas.

I’m curious to see how this helps Lesnar. Obviously he would need to work on his submission defense against Mir, but I’ve also considered his striking to be somewhat sloppy. When he throws his hammer fists, there doesn’t seem to be any accuracy to them as much as him just throwing a bunch of them hoping a few connect.

Granted I say that as I eat a donut at my desk, and a few connecting is obviously enough for him to become world champion. I’m just saying, is all.

I think this is pretty smart for Lesnar. Couture’s take down defense is legendary, and no one knows how to demoralize an opponent against the fence and impose his will like Randy does. With Lesnar’s power he could neutralize a lot of opponents.

I still think he loses to Mir again though – doesn’t matter who he trains with.
