BAM Stimulus: Liberal Overreach?

You may or may not have heard, but P.E. BAM spoke yesterday and started the push for his not quite $1 TRILLION stimulus plan. He of course used all the politics of fear typical of the Democrat party, aboot how the sky is falling and if we don’t let him do this no questions asked, it’ll be the end of the world as we know it (you know, the same rationale liberals have admired George Bush for using to go to war in Iraq).

Quick side note: If P.E. BAM wants bi-partisan support, saying things like he’s open to all ideas including from people like Paul Krugman (who thinks “lower taxes” are racist code words)…not really a good starting point. I digress.

Here’s an interesting wrinkle though. While R’s are proceeding with caution, it’s the D’s who seem to have the biggest beef. Rich Lowry has the rundown of the headlines, but they seem to have the biggest problem with – and this may surprise you – the tax cuts that are a part of BAM Stimulus. They don’t like tax cuts to small businesses, and the $500 – $800 back to the taxpayers – which breaks down to $20-$50 a week, aren’t worth it to them.

Of course they love the 600,000 new government jobs (which more importantly means 600,000 more paychecks that union bosses can take money out of and donate back to the Democrat Party), but the tax cuts…not so much.

Two things come to mind. One is a recent Gallup poll. Yes, 53% approve of P.E. BAM’s plan (coincidentally, the same percent who voted for him). But if you look into the numbers, the two elements of the stimulus that got the strongest support were the “conservative catnip,” or in other words, the income and business tax cuts.

The other thing is what I find the most amusing. All throughout the election, when Obama was talking aboot his middle class tax cut, he was talking aboot the $20-$50 a week.

When the Democrat party was telling you that Obama was going to lower your taxes, they were talking aboot that $20-$50 a week.

When all of the Obama cultists, followers, and supporters in the mainstream media were telling you that Obama was going to lower your taxes, they were talking aboot the $20-$50 a week.

And when people left the voting booth and told the people conducting the exit polls that Obama was going to lower their taxes, they may not have realized it at the time, but they were talking aboot the $20-$50 a week.

My thing has always been that if you’re going to tell me your vote can be bought for $20-$50 a week I’m going to tell you you’re pathetic and sad, but since more people disagreed with me than agreed with me (and my guy ran a campaign that was so terrible it should be studied) that’s neither here nor there. BAM won by convincing voters he was going to lower their taxes, and to his credit, he’s trying to do that.

The rub is that the Democrat party members in the House and Senate seem to have different ideas.

Grab your popcorn and your lawn chair. This could be fun.
