Michael Steele has picked up a few endorsements for RNC Chair from conservative stalwarts like Sean Hannity, Bill Bennett, John Brodigan, and Alex Castellanos. The rub is they don’t get to vote.
The only opinions that matter are those of the 168 members of the Republican National Committee (as that one douchebag from North Dakota likes to remind us). Not to worry though, because Michael “Man of” Steele is people who knows people, and has them working behind the scenes to “whip up” votes.
As per CNN…
Former Maryland Lt. Gov. Michael Steele [announced] that a dozen Republican National Committee members are whipping votes on his behalf to be the next leader of the national party…Wisconsin Republican Party Chair Reince Priebus will unveil Steele’s whip operation in a memo to supporters — though in a copy of the document provided to CNN, he stops short of naming other RNC members who have vowed to vote for the former lieutenant governor when the national party meets at the end of the month.
A Steele political advisor tells CNN that the former lieutenant governor has “31 hard commitments” from RNC members. It is difficult to judge true support for any one of these candidates because it is a secret ballot, but political observers view Steele as a serious contender for the top spot.
So what does this mean for those of us in the cheap seats? Not all that much, other than the fact that outside of a recent debate, Steele has been quiet in his bid for RNC Chair. And while he’s the most popular name out of the six or seven that are running, a few of the other cats appeared to be making the most head way with RNC members.
This announcement lets supporters know he’s still running strong, and God willing, will be the next RNC Chair. Because I don’t know aboot you, if Mike Duncan gets re-elected the RNC won’t be seeing another dime out of me.
UPDATE: As per Geraghty the Indispensable, Michael Steele recently sent out this e-mail to all members of the Republican National Committee:
I recently received an email that attacked Saul Anuzis in a viscous and personal manner. You probably all received it. It was pathetic.
And the email said it was from “the real saul anuzis”. About a month ago, I was on the receiving end of a similar anonymous broadside.
This is an absurd way to run a railroad. This is not a student council election.
I’m all in favor of a spirited race and a vigorous exchange of ideas.
Here’s an idea – if anyone wants to attack one of the candidates, they should be adult enough to put their name behind it.
Just a thought.
Michael Steele
