“The version in the House needs to change. I don’t want to stimulate people’s re-election.” – Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) on the current draft of the 2009 Fiscal Suicide Act
I’ve always liked Lindsey Graham. I know because he doesn’t drink the Kool-Aid on illegal-immigration he gets labeled as a squishy-RiNO (albeit one who has a 90 lifetime rating with the American Conservative Union), but he’s always been pretty solid on spending. Even though he voted for the first bailout (as did Tom Coburn, R-OK, and no one would call him squishy) he did so after speaking out against the payout to ACORN that Chris Dodd (D-CT) originally had in the bill.
Having a “moderate” like Graham on TV speaking out against the 2009 Fiscal Suicide Act helps in the long run. Plus, as P.BAM told us during his speech today, we’re entering a new era of bi-partisanship. So I’m calling on my conservative brethren to answer that call. Let us reach across the isle to work closely with the Democrats…who oppose FSA09 too.
Whaaaaat? Deomcrats, you say? Two of them even! First we have Rep. Heath Shuler (D-NC)…
Shuler said the money must go toward infrastructure construction and the expansion of broadband Internet access throughout the country. The bill should focus on job creation, he added. “We want people to work,” he said. “We need to be building bridges. We need to be laying infrastructure.”
But Shuler said the price tag of the stimulus package is high, and he is concerned about returning fiscal responsibility to Washington. He is a member of the fiscally conservative Democratic Blue Dog Caucus and was recently elected whip of the group.
And then there’s Sen. Kent Conrad (D-ND)…
Senator Kent Conrad, a North Dakota Democrat, said his committee projects the plan will reduce the unemployment rate by “maybe” 1 percent, or about half of the 3 million jobs Obama has said the plan would generate.
People seem to forget, the reason why the first bailout was voted down in the house was because of NINETY-FIVE Democrats joining with Republicans to say “Nay.” Granted, these weren’t exactly profiles in courage as most were running in close congressional races at the time, but still ninety-five votes are ninety five votes.
Not all Democrats are into recklessly spending money all willy nilly and saddling our children and grandchildren with an extra $6,900 of debt per house hold (on top of all the other bailout debt)…no matter what people like Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid have to say.
So let’s listen to our new President and work with the Democrats!
