With Apologies to Hugh Hewitt (No. 2 in a Series)

Yes, “With Apologies to Hugh Hewitt” is it’s own series now. I figure with the amount of times I read a blog post of his that makes me think a) that was extremely insightful, and b) I wish I had listened to him last year instead of making fun of his fondness for Mitt Romney, I owe him that much.

Today we have a Hugh Hewitt 2-fer. First are his thoughts towards the next two years, in comparison to the first two years of the Clinton Administration…

It has been 14 years since the GOP was in such a weak position inside the Beltway, but the first two years of the Clinton term provided a season of growth and energy that powered first Newt and then the successes of 2000, 2002 and 2004. As the “stimulus” charade in the House demonstrates, you can count of the Dems to blow their opportunity to govern from the center. The new media infrastructure of the center-right will benefit from the period of opposition, and the ideas infrastructure within D.C. and throughout the connected organizations across the country will prosper as well.

The left is going to discover quickly that defending an Administration across a broad front of issues is a much more difficult task than attacking one selectively. The new president’s move to the center on some appointments is going to buy him some time, but as the flaws in the stimulus package show, he won’t be able to keep the left side of his coalition from exposing the Administration to well-grounded criticism.

And next are his thoughts on John Cornyn and the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC)

The NRSC was outraised by $65 million in the last cycle, so Cornyn’s early and energetic start is welcome news for a GOP base looking for somewhere to plant a flag. If candidate recruitment n Florida, Arkansas, Ohio, Illinois and Colorado goes well, Cornyn will benefit from a groundswell of support for restoring balance in D.C. The unbelievable waste in the stimulus bill that the House unveiled is a great wake-up call to the cost to the country of large Democratic majorities in both Houses.

The underlying message in both passages is simple: Keep the faith!
