Chairman “Man of” Steele starts his first week as chairman of the RNC, and as you can expect, everyone and their moms has advice for what he should do first and what he should do next. Jen Rubin, one of my Top 5 conservative opinion movers, had a list of seven steps he could take to set the party on the road to recovery.
All seven were great ideas, but the first one really popped out:
Steele should offer to debate DNC Chairman Tim Kaine coast-to-coast on the Democrats’ stimulus plan and the economic crisis. This is the number one issue on voters’ minds, and for once the Republicans are making headway. The public is souring on the House Democrats’ spend-a-thon disguised as a stimulus bill. And Republicans have an attractive message: cut the pork, reduce taxes, and, if we must spend gobs of money, do it on worthwhile infrastructure and needed national defense projects. Steele is a capable and likeable figure who could communicate this message well. And a debate offer would signify that the Republicans aren’t afraid to take on the administration when it is wrong. (It would also give Steele a high visibility platform to re-establish the GOP’s populist credentials, by among other things, taking on the Obama administration’s not very New Politics — including the White House’s proclivity to hire ex-lobbyists and tax cheats.)
DNC Chair Tim Kaine responded to Chairman Steele’s election by saying that he hopes we can leave politics aside and work together by bending over for the Democrats and calling it bi-partisanship. A debate would force Kaine to have to actually have to man up defend the merits of the crap sandwich the kids are calling the 2009 Fiscal Suicide Act, and not just rely on the talking points he sends to other Democrat activists like NBC News and the New York Times.
A Michael Steele debate would also be good for the party because Steele is “uniquely qualified” to speak on a number of issues facing Americans that other Republican’s…aren’t. Point of fact, this quote of his from “Fox News Sunday” yesterday…
We did it right here in my home town of the District of Columbia. The president of the United States, when he was a U.S. senator, blocked three times – tried to block three times legislation that would enable poor black children in this city to go to the high school that I graduated from, what they otherwise wouldn’t be able to afford to do. So create those opportunities. Put people on a pathway to earn a job, earn an education, so they can empower themselves. I don’t need the government to do that.
Chairman Steele is going to be a very interesting cat to watch in the weeks and months to come.

I love watching the GOP hail their new leader as a harbinger of change and rebuilding the future of your party. Steele wants to reach out to minorities (ie Latino’s, Hispanics, etc.)
You would think if the head of a national party has a real plan to garner support from minorities, you’d think he wouldve been able to implement them himself. Check out his exit-polls from when he ran for governor of MD……about a 19% support from AFRICAN AMERICANS!…..lol.
Good luck with that GOP….looks like you’re going to have a strong and LONG future as a regional RUMP party….
Oh, and tell us one more time how your beloved Sarah Palin hates earmarks as she begs Washington to send some of the stimulus her way……
Hey, while you’re trolling around, you might as well bash Sarah Palin while you’re still here:

Pay no attention to the gloaters. When their leader tries to strong arm of opposing party by taunting them with “I won” it’s no wonder they are a pain in the a–. I just keep thinking about how much fun it’s going to be when we win back a majority in the house in 2010.
You mean Sarah “I’m against earmarks except when I’m for them” Palin? Which basically sinks her entire “I’m not part of the Beltway crowd” schtick.
Dude- you people need to get a grip. Your party is searching for the Titanic–and its not coming up for air…
Sorry, but the Republican Party is becoming less and less relevant by the week. Not only are they a minority in the House, a minority in the Senate, and a minority of governoships, their voted aren’t needed to pass anything. They are irrelevant to begin with, and by stomping their feet and throwing a hissy fit over every one of the comprehensive plans to fix the mess the GOP made of everything, they look small and petty.
Really, you guys are lucky some people in the news media take you seriously, because a majority of Americans sure as heck do not.
