I know I jokingly hit you with headlines like “Mitt Romney Announces His Candidacy for President” or “My Exclusive Interview with Mitt Romney,” but there might actually be some truth to this one. The buzz on the Internet is that Romney is considering a move to Nevada to run against current Sen. Harry Reid in 2010.
I can’t verify the accuracy of the website, but the rationale for the move makes a modicum of sense…
I received a tip from one of my best and most trusted sources that Mitt Romney was contemplating moving to Nevada to take on Harry Reid in 2010. The thinking was explained to me like this: Palin has so much grassroots support and will exert such gravity from the right flank in the 2012 Republican Primaries, that something dramatic would be needed to overcome her built-in advantage. Taking out the sitting Democratic Senate Majority Leader would do just that. Can you just imagine? It would be absolutely epic…
Then there’s also this…
American Future Fund, a federal 501(c)(4) political group formed by alumni of Mitt Romney’s presidential campaign, has set up a website whose principal reason for existence is to attack U.S. Sen. Harry Reid of Nevada. AFF also has an affiliated political action committee called American Future Fund Political Action. The website is at http://watchinreid.com/. This is the same group that last week ran ads attacking Reid.
So…I don’t know what to think. I’m not sure how Nevada takes to carpetbaggers (i.e., people who move to a state just to run), but New York and Minnesota didn’t seem to mind. And the 2012 logic makes sense too. Unless things go drastically wrong, running against Obama would be an exercise in futility. Then in 2016, 69 year-old Mitt Romney would have to contend with 45 year-old Bobby Jindal (or possibly 52 year-old Sarah Palin).
A senate run, if he didn’t want to run as governor of Michigan, would make the most sense for Mitt Romney.
And if he does take out Harry Reid, Senate Minority Leader Romney has a nice ring to it.
UPDATE: If not Nevada, maybe New Hampshire?
