The Washington Post has started a great sub-site called WhoRunsGov.com, focusing on news stories and profiles on people who…well, run the government. They just added a profile for Mitt Romney, which I’m sure to no one’s surprise, focused heavily on his economic background…
Desperately in need of some sound economic advice, the GOP is turning to an MBA they can trust. Romney’s expertise on financial issues has increasing value to his party as bailouts, spending and deficits are overshadowing social issues…
The Republican Working Group on Economic Recovery, chaired by GOP Whip Rep. Eric Cantor (R-Va.), summoned Romney to Capitol Hill in early January 2009 to propose alternative ideas to President Obama’s stimulus bill.(1) Weeks later, he was invited to speak at a retreat for Republican House Members where he received an effusive reception, complete with two standing ovations.
I had mentioned last week aboot a rumor circulating that Romney was going to move to Nevada to challenge Harry Reid for his senate seat. While I dig the idea of Sen. Romney (and especially Senate Majority Leader Romney), there might be a state that’s closer to his base of operations, that is going to have an open seat in 2010. New Hampshire.
It makes more sense. He already has a residence there, so it dulls the “carpet bagger” label a little bit. Current Sen. Gregg Judd (or Judd Gregg) said he wasn’t planning to run for re-election, so the seat would be wide open.
But most importantly, Chairman Steele has said that one of his first orders of business would be to rebuild the Republican Party in the Northeast (and probably Illinois). Who better to lead the charge in New England that Mitt Romney, especially with a platform to show off his economic expertise?
It’s just a thought. I figure if he’s tossing around the idea of running for senate, it would be more beneficial to everyone involved for him to stay closer to home.
Now we just have to find someone in Nevada.
