I always tell my fellow YRs that they need to lighten up and, for the love of God, have interests outside of politics. The master plan is to get everyone to break the old school Alex P. Keaton style of Young Republicanism. More importantly, having interests outside of politics is great when it comes to breaking the ice and networking. It can’t all be about fighting socialism and getting to the bottom of where the President was really born…KIDDING! That’s sarcasm, folks.
My top non-political interest is mixed martial arts, what most people know as the UFC: Ultimate Fighting Championship. We all get together every month with a case or two of beer and watch guys pummel each other. Yes, it’s as awesome as it sounds. However, besides being one of the fastest growing sports and another excuse for my friends to get together and drink (and this is where I get to the point of why you’re reading this), the UFC is also a highly lucrative private company, and I find myself becoming more and more impressed with how they’ve been utilizing new/social/direct media.
The question is how do we take some of their ideas and interpolate them into a political campaign? There are three things they do specifically that I think can not only be incorporated into a campaign, but done so using minimal resources.
In what I’m sure is the opening of the seventh seal that will bring forth the apocalypse, Superbowl…um, whatever number is in 2014, will be played in New Jersey.
Here’s my question: which team do you think will choke the hardest that year, the Jets or the Giants?
I’ve mentioned before that, while being a blogger makes me an expert in all sorts of things that I’m not, the interconnectedness of global finance gives me a headache. And while I’m as anti-bailout as the rest of you, I allow for the fact that there’s a lot I don’t know. I rely on people smarter than me to make sense of the nonsensical.
One of the columnists I rely on is Robert Sammuelson, a right leaning economics writer for the “Washington Post.” Rep. Paul Ryan is always sharing links to his writing, and he always males a great deal of sense whether it be jobs, health care reform, stimulus, etc. Granted it’s usually positions I agree with in the first place. He just explains to me why.
So imagine my surprise when he came out in FAVOR of bailing out Europe…

“People seek my advice out, which is really flattering. The fact that I’m not running for something puts me in a position where I might be listened to more.” - Jeb Bush
I mention this every time I write aboot Jeb Bush, but it really is a shame his last name isn’t “Smith” or “Dziedzic” or something. Jeb Dziedzic would be our strongest candidate going into 2012 and the leader of the Republican Party. He has Newt Gingrich’s knack for policy, minus the baggage.
Jeb Bush is, well, George W. Bush’s brother, and Bush did this, Bush did that, Bush did it with a waffle ball bat.
At least he’s still a vital voice in the party, even if he probably never will run for office again (thought Florida Sen. Bill Nelson is up for re-election 2014…just saying). We need more people talking aboot education reform, and pushing the party to present our better ideas to the American people, as opposed to just yelling the words “Socialism.”
