Did Young Republicans Kill the Culture Wars?

There was an interesting article in the always fair and balanced NY Post look at young voters, partially Young Republicans, and how while they support lower taxes and more fiscally conservative policies, their view on the hot button social issues ranges from libertarian to indifference. This is a reason why in New Jersey and Massacusettes, “… old-guard liberals were recently replaced by Chris Christie and Scott Brown, libertarian-ish Republicans who are socially liberal but fiscally conservative.”

Actually, by “they” I should say “we” because I’m a Young Republican myself and find that in running with other YRs, while we’re united behind fiscal policy and (for the most part) foreign policy, socially we’re all over the place, Myself for example, while I’m Pro Life and think people should be allowed to responsibly own and carry fire arms, I also think gay people should have the legal right to make the same mistakes that straight people do, and with out being a “global warming alarmist” still think that pumping chemicals into the atmosphere is probably not a good thing.

And as the article shows, most youngins in general are scattered…

Random Thoughts: Dave Weigel

I think everything that needs to be said has been said on the Dave Weigel/WaPo kafuffle (Byron York has a great write up). I’d just leave with these three thoughts:

1.  I think it was less aboot Weigel as much as it was the frustration of having the President of the United States whining aboot how biased Fox News is while you have the NY Times and Washington Post hiring HYPER-partisan liberal bloggers to cover politics for them, without even pretending to care aboot balance.

2.  By hyper-partisan (which Weigel wasn’t), I mean the kind of open-minded and tolerant liberal progressives who accused the McCain campaign of racism every other week, doesn’t think there’s a difference between me and one guy out of a thousand holding up a “Go Back to Kenya” sign at a protest, and view conservatives not as people to be debated…but to be “exposed.” That last part gets me the most because besides them being closed minded and intolerant of people who disagree with them, if we’re so wrong aboot everything…shouldn’t debating us be easy?

3.  If WaPo would have done something as simple as hire Robert Bluey to balance out Ezra Klein, there wouldn’t be as much outrage.

Obama to the Private Sector: FOOLED YOU!

This article comes to no surprise to me, because during the day I’m employed by a small business (like I think 70% of America), and I know how much Democrat economic policies, particularly under the current regime, are making it hard for us to keep it together. And that’s just the national policies…don’t get me started on the statewide ones.

It’s because of this I found it so surprising that larger companies were quick to cave in to an administration who is clearly anti-private sector, and apparently thought that if they played nice Obama wasn’t going to raise their taxes and pile on more regulation that makes it harder for them to create jobs, keep costs and prices down, and otherwise stay in business.

Apparently they’re starting to wake up, at least according to a recent Wall Street Journal article…

Did Marco Rubio Really Flip on ObamaCare?

People are accusing Marco Rubio of a flip and/or flop, after an interview with Jim Geraghty concerning ObamaCare. Setting aside the fact that you need to suspend reality if you believe Republicans are actually going to repeal the law, I don’t see it.

The rub is that I think because we live in such a gotcha climate, people only accept five words answers out of you, and if any of those five words aren’t the words they want to hear…quickly Robin, to the blog cave! I must bash thee! Both sides are guilty of it, and this instance is a perfect example because Rubio has the Left and the Right accusing him as flipping on ObamaCare.

Maybe I’m just a squishy RINO moderate from the Northeast, but I don’t see it…

Reps. Ryan and Hensarling: Choose Your America

We’ve been following Reps. Paul Ryan and Jeb Hensarling series of editorial in the Washington Examiner (Part 1 and Part 2) and the concluded with the grand finale…a push for Ryan’s “Roadmap for America’s Future.” Shocking I know, though probably not to anyone who has read this blog before.

They did bring up an important point, and one that was echoed in Arthur C. Brooks “The Battle.” Brooks describes the latest front in the culture war as “…not the culture war of the 1990s. This is not a fight over guns, abortions, religion, and gays. Nor is it about Republicans vs. Democrats. Rather, it is a struggle between two competing visions of America’s future.”

Ryan and Hensarling lay out the two visions…
