Mitch Daniels: On Social Issues and a Money Back Guarantee

We have a double dose of the “Monday Mitch” today. I try, depending on time and laziness, to share at least one article concerning my preferred candidate in the 2012 GOP Primary. Thanks to Snowpocolypse 2010 attacking my poor little Long Island (not that I would to complain to anyone from Indiana aboot the snow), you get two!

The first deals with the economy, which is the main reason many of us who are fans of Mitch Daniels are in fact fans of Mitch Daniels. Jonah Goldberg even referred to him as, “…the first pick of wonks and D. C. eggheads.” A perfect example of why would be what he’s doing as Governor of Indiana right now.

You hear R’s and C’s always talking aboot balancing the budget. Why not balance the budget AND give people their money back…

UFC 125 Resolution – Predictions

UFC 125: Resolution is this Saturday, headlined by Frankie Edgar making his first non-BJ Penn title defense against Gray Maynard…the man responsible for his only loss in MMA. Injuries kept plaguing the rest of the show, but the line up is set and here come the predictions…

UNDERCARD
I’ll take Dong Hyun Kim over Nate Diaz for the same reason I always do…just because I fucking hate Nate Diaz.

Clay Guida vs. Takanori Gomi is an interesting match up. Guida always puts on a good fight, regardless of whether he wins or not. Gomi looks like he shook off the “Pride Curse” with his recent win decimation of Tyson Griffin. I like Gomi for the win here, and wouldn’t be surprised to see him get the winner of the UFC/WEC unification fight.

I’d really like to like Brandon Vera, and there was a time when I did. I just don’t think he has it anymore, and Thiago Silva is dangerous. Silva wins.

POLL: Who would win, Georges St. Pierre or Anderson Silva?

It’s the fight most UFC fans are salivating for, and UFC president Dana White is finally warming up to the idea. Could 2011 be the year we finally get the answer of who’s the pound for pound best: Georges St. Pierre or Anderson Silva?

A few things have to happen. First, both guys need to finish cleaning out their divisions. GSP will do that with a win over Jake Shields. Anderson has to get past Vitor Belfort, and possibly the winner of a Wanderlei Silva/Chael Sonnen fight.

The other thing is deciding what weight class they’d fight at. While a catch weight is possible, the most likely would be GSP leaving the welterweight division and bulking up to 185 to making a run as a middleweight.

So who would win? My gut tells me Georges St. Pierre, but I’d like to hear you all think. You can vote in the poll and/or give your best MMA analysis in the comment section…

Will Republicans Nominate Mitch Daniels in 2012?

The other week or so, I was having a kibitz at a YR event with our peerless leader aboot the upcoming 2012 primaries and the 217 or so people rumoured to be running. She knows I’m pro-Mitch Daniels, and the main question was whether he was electable or not.

Three main issues came up. The first is name recognition, when outside of Indiana only dorks like me know who he is. That can be overcome through campaigning and an insane amount of it. The second was if he “looked” presidential enough. While I understand that’s important, outside of Mitt Romney who comes out of central casting, I didn’t think any of them really “looked presidential.” That’s something for the consultants to figure out.

The third one was the one most important to me, and that once we get down to issues. The rub with Daniels is that, while he’s great on the economy, he recently angered social conservatives by calling for a “truce” on social issues. Everyone says you can win without the SoCons, but with all the focus on the economy in the past election…would that be true in 2011-12?

Here’s a snippet from a recent article in NRO
