UFC 128 Shogun vs. Jones Predictions

In a “Rocky” story come to life, Jon “Bones” Jones is getting the opportunity of a lifetime to fight Shogun Rua for the light heavyweight title this Saturday at UFC 128…and I’ve haven’t looked this forward to a fight since Rashad vs. Rampage. There are a bunch more fights on the card too. Let’s get it on…

Preliminary Fights
Give me Ricardo Almeida over Mike Pyle, Gleison Tibau over Kurt Pellegrino, Elliot Marshall over Luis Cane, and Edson Barboza Jr. over Anthony Njokuani.

Undercard
For my “upset pick,” I’m like Brendan Schaub over Mirko Cro Cop. It might not be that big of an upset since Cro Cop’s not really what he used to be, but humour me here.

Dan Miller vs. Nate Marquardt could possibly steal the show in a wide open middleweight division (since no one in it is close to being a serious contender to Anderson Silva). I’m going with Miller with a decision victory.

On Facebook, New Jersey, and Education Reform

Generally speaking, living in New York, when I get into a political discussion with someone that makes me want to bang my head against the bar, it’s usually from someone on the left. Conservatives up in these here parts are viewed by liberals with a morbid curiosity, and if they know you disagree with them will come armed with talking points for whatever the issue du joir is, while you’re just looking to drink a beer.

In this particular case however, it was one of my own. We were talking about the $500 million that Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg donated to the Newark school system. This happened late last year, when he appeared on the Oprah Winfrey show with New Jersey Governor Chris Christie and Newark Mayor Cory Booker.

This person I was talking to had a problem with this, for two inexplicable reasons:

Let Jon “Bones” Jones Fight in Madison Square Garden

Regardless of the ridonkulous amount of revenue it would bring into a state that sorely needs it, Mixed Martial Arts still is not legal in the state of New York.

Cats like Republican Assemblyman Dean Murray are in favor of it, others like Democrat Assemblyman Bob Reilly are against it (and who may or may not have been bought off by labor unions). Besides being frustrating to NY MMA fans, I’m sure it’s even worse for NY MMA fighters like Rochester’s Jon “Bones” Jones.

Especially in the case of Jones, who if you follow the UFC, you know is living a story that seems straight out of the movie “Rocky.” Picture it, Las Vegas, 2011. Jon Jones, a relative newcomer to the sport (has been fighting for less that three years) just defeated Ryan Bader. His training partner, Rashad Evans, was supposed to fight Light heavyweight Champion (and one of the best in MMA history) Shogun Rua for the title, but had to pull out due to injury. Jones was surprised live in the ring with a title shot.

What the GOP can learn from the UFC

This was originally writen for TechRepublican.com back in May 2010. I thought I’d share…

I always tell my fellow YRs that they need to lighten up and, for the love of God, have interests outside of politics. The master plan is to get everyone to break the old school Alex P. Keaton style of Young Republicanism. More importantly, having interests outside of politics is great when it comes to breaking the ice and networking. It can’t all be about fighting socialism and getting to the bottom of where the President was really born…KIDDING! That’s sarcasm, folks.

My top non-political interest is mixed martial arts, what most people know as the UFC: Ultimate Fighting Championship. We all get together every month with a case or two of beer and watch guys pummel each other. Yes, it’s as awesome as it sounds. However, besides being one of the fastest growing sports and another excuse for my friends to get together and drink (and this is where I get to the point of why you’re reading this), the UFC is also a highly lucrative private company, and I find myself becoming more and more impressed with how they’ve been utilizing new/social/direct media.

The question is how do we take some of their ideas and interpolate them into a political campaign? There are three things they do specifically that I think can not only be incorporated into a campaign, but done so using minimal resources.

Marc Molinaro for Dutchess County Executive

I’ve mentioned before – and I say this as not only the voice, but also the heart and soul of the NY State Young Republicans –one of the worst kept secrets is how much we love Assemblyman Marc Molinaro. The running gag is to never refer to him as “Assemblyman” and instead choose words like “Congressman,” “Senator,” and “Governor.”

The second word broke that the current County Executive of Dutchess is retiring, the “Draft @marcmolinaro” tweets started to go out…which is why it’s more than a little bit of teh awesome to read that he’s “mulling it over.” On a recent episode of “The Right Hook” we had declared Dutchess to be the YR capital of New York, so it would only make sense that our “chairman” runs it.

It’s funny though, because we had just had our state meeting in Dutchess County a week or two ago where Molinaro spoke. Earlier that afternoon in the business meeting, they had talk aboot my experience at CPAC where I had said my favourite speech was Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels. What made it memorable for me wasn’t so much what he said as much as it was the friends from Indiana I was watching it with, and seeing them literally beaming with pride for their Governor.

The Force is Not Strong with Mike Huckabee

There was a time where I was a big fan of Mike Huckabee. My first ever campaign contribution was $20.08 to his last primary campaign. I enjoyed his books, a lot of his ideas, and him simply saying, “I’m a conservative, but I’m not angry about it.” I know others have cried RINO because of (place issue here), but whatever.

He was the first candidate on our side who, when reporters only wanted to ask him aboot Jesus, would actually ask them, “why not a question about education or the economy?” And while his bitterness towards Mitt Romney leaves a lot to be desired, I still enjoyed his commentary. But lately…it’s like one dumb comment after another, most recently directed towards Natalie Portman.

So sayeth Huck…
