Top 5 Songs of 2011: #1. “Keep Me in Mind” by Zac Brown Band

Anyone who knows me can’t be shocked that a Zac Brown Band song is my number one song of the year. I’ve bonded with so many different groups of friends over ZBB over the past twelve months, and once I got a hold “Keep Me in Mind” it was easily my favourite song from their last album.

It’s fun, puts me in a happy place, and I’ve taken to calling in my own personal anthem.

So after counting down Song #5 (Toby Keith), #4 (Bruno Mars), #3 (Taylor Swift), and #2 (Taking Back Sunday), your #1 song of the year…

Top 5 Songs of 2011: #3. “Ours” by Taylor Swift

Haters gonna hate, but I’m still a big Taylor Swift fan. This song blew me away when she performed it at the CMA’s awards, both in her song writing as well as the performance. The line “Don’t you worry your pretty little mind/People throw rocks at things that shine” is my favourite lyrics of the year.

I also like that, in a genre full a pop tarts, she gives young girls an option of someone with talents and a level head to lookj up to. With my baby sister giving me a baby niece next year, that matters to me more than it normally would.

So because I’m a big enough fan, you get two videos: the official one, and the live performance from the CMA’s.

Top 5 Songs of 2011: #5. “Red Solo Cup” by Toby Keith

One of the things I love best about country music is how seamless you can go from songs about Jesus and America, to drinking and partying. Toby Keith’s “Red Solo Cup” is obviously the later, and probably one of the catchiest songs of the year.

Everything you need to know aboot the song is in the title, and without even hearing it you can relate to filling the cup at the keg or outside a football game. And on a personal note, the song came out during the final days with my dad and was a well needed distraction. It felt a little weird wandering around the hallways of a hospital singing to myself, but it worked.

Here’s the video…

2011 New Artist of the Year: Levi Lowrey and Sonia Leigh

Anyone who knows me knows I’m a huge Zac Brown Band fan, so it shouldn’t be a shock that my “New Artist of the Year’ is a tie between two Southern Ground artists: Levi Lowrey (“I Confess I Was a Fool”) and Sonia Leigh (“1978 December”). Though as incredible as I felt both albums were, it’s the personal connection I made with the music this year that really affected me.

During the last days with my father, when the days were spent at the hospital, the nights were spent generally reflecting on what was going on trying to drink myself to sleep. It’s not something I’m particularly proud of – especially when I started with Goose Island Bourbon County stout and ended with Bud Lite Lime (it wasn’t pretty) – but we all mourn in our own ways. Plus it’s not like I was drinking alone, because they were there with me.

I’d stay up until 2am listening to their albums over and over again. It relaxed me and helped keep me calm, and in some way helped take my mind off of what I was ready to admit was coming next. The outpouring of support from friends and family was and has been humbling, but it was Levi Lowrey and Sonia Leigh there with me when I was at my lowest. That’s something I’ll never forget.

Anyway, here are my two favourite songs from the two of them…
