NY Conservatives Actually Get One Right

While registered as an “R,” I’ve always considered myself more of a conservative than I am a Republican, and have been extremely disenchanted with the “conservative” party of New York. In Westchester and Nassau counties they’ve endorsed liberal Democrats who also have the nomination of the Working Families Party (aka ACORN), and in Nassau nominated their own candidate – a guy who works for the county chair – for country executive, for no other reason than to spite the Republican chair over a silly dispute.

All that said, this is race I actually agree with them on.

Barack Obama nominated NY congressman John McHugh to be Secretary of the Army, leaving his seat in the NY-23 open. McHugh is considered to be a “moderate” Republican, who on his way out was one of eight R’s who voted to kill jobs with the Pelosi-Obama “Cap and Tax” bill. So who does the Republican Party appoint (there was never an actual “election”) to run for the open seat?

Open Memo to My Fellow Conservatives (No. 7 in a Series)

To my fellow conservatives,

If you find yourself searching for reason why the Republican Party is in the shape it’s in, I give you the following quote from North Dakota Republican Party Chairman Gary Emineth concerning the RNC Chairman elections:

“At the end of the day, it doesn’t matter what the public thinks; it matters what 168 of us think.”

Yep, you folks sure have been doing a gangbusters job as of late.

I feel like smashing something.

Sincerely,
John Brodigan

Open Memo to My Fellow Conservatives (No. 6 in a Series)

Dear Fellow Conservatives,

As we prepare to elect new leadership to the RNC, I want you to consider these quotes from a current RNC member who isn’t a fan of Michael Steele:

“For this association of members to choose to outsource its leadership would, I believe, be an abdication of our responsibility. In my estimation, 168 committed members of the Republican National Committee are a powerful army of qualified advocates for Republican principles; certainly much more threatening to the Democrats than one celebrity spokesman.”

What Democrats do you know who are running scared from the Republican Party lately?

“Getting the Republican Party back on the right ‘track’ is a job rightfully left to the Republicans who have been elected to run this railroad.”

Yeah, you people have been doing a bang up job lately.  Just ask President McCain and Speaker Ryan.

Le sigh.

Sincerely,
John Brodigan

P.S. Vote for Steele

Dear Fellow Conservatives,

I’m not into right-on-right violence.  So when Christie Todd Whitman wants to get rid of Tony Perkins, or when Rush Limbaugh wants to kick out David Brooks, I ask “can’t we all just get along?”

But I think we all can agree that Kathleen Parker is an absolute dingbat.

Sincerely,
John Brodigan

Dear Fellow Conservatives,

With all this talk aboot “rebranding” and what we have to do to reach out to new voters, what aboot the “ConservatismWOW” campaign?

Only instead of the Buddy Christ, we’d have the Buddy Reagan.

Think aboot it.

Sincerely,
John Brodigan

Open Memo to My Fellow Conservatives (No. 3 in a Series)

Dear Fellow Conservatives,

Barry Goldwater was set to campaign with John F. Kennedy all across the United States debating him.

William F. Buckley had a television series just for debating the opposition.

Ronald Reagan would go at it with House Speaker Tip O’Neil during the day, and then have him over for drinks at night.

These three, the trinity of conservatism, regularly debated the opposition about the direction of our country.

So why is it we don’t seem capable of debating each other aboot the direction of our party?

Sincerely,
John Brodigan
