Failing as the Man of the House

My mom has always filled the role of the “man of the house.” That’s just who she was…instead of having a “honey do” list, she’d just do. The other week, while I was kibitzing to some of you fine folks on Twitter, there was a ruckus in the kitchen. My mom was sawing off the top of a metal wine rack just to make it fit in the cabinet better.

What my dad’s role was, which I’m finding out now, is that he would know who to call when something went wrong. Of course when I finally realized this it was Christmas Day, there was something scurrying around our attic, the roof had rotted, the gradient heat wasn’t working, and the thermostat found a way to turn the heat up ten degrees even when it was shut off.

Giving Thanks 2011

“For His anger endures but for a moment; in His favor is life: weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning.” – Psalm 30:5

I’m thankful for God in Heaven, who I hope hasn’t grown tired of my dad’s jokes yet.

I’m thankful for my mom, whose strength puts Nancy Reagan to shame.

I’m thankful for the next generation of Brodigan who will be welcomed into the world this Spring.

I’m thankful for my brother-in-law Keith. The added stress of suddenly being the, for lack of a better phrase, “man of the house” was made easier because I know after these past two months that, Heaven forbid something ever happened to me, I have complete faith and trust that Keith would be there to take care of the only two things that matter to me: my mom and my sister.

I’m thankful for a fifteen minute conversation I had with retired detectives Danny Kotter and Jerry Fenney.

Happy 3rd Anniversary to Smart Girl Politics!

Just wanted to wish everyone at Smart Girl Politics a happy 3rd anniversary. I had started blogging around the same time that GSP launched, and my first “event” was the 9/12 march in 2009 where I first got to spend time with Stacy Mott, Teri Christoph, and Tabitha Hale.

After three years of blogging and twittering, of CPAC’s and Smart Girl Summits, of karaoke and Jack Daniels, I have had the opportunity to work with some great people and make some even greater friends, many of whom got their start or were at some point involved with Smart Girl Politics.

Happy Anniversary! I can’t wait to see what y’all have planned for your fourth year.

On Ed Koch, the Muppets, and the Last Schmaltzy Post Aboot My Dad

One of my goals in life was to see former NYC Mayor Ed Koch at a fundraiser somewhere, just so could walk up to him and say that I loved him in “The Muppets Take Manhattan.”

It’s the best cameo in the history of cinema. Gonzo runs up to him to ask if he’s seen a frog who could sing and dance. The Mayor: “No, but if he can also balance the budget, I’ll hire him.” Sadly, a video clip doesn’t exist of this on teh internets, so you’ll just have to trust me on its comedic value. It was with this in mind that I remembered it didn’t hurt to send an e-mail, and after finding an e-mail address I asked and his assistant said yes.

I set it for November 1st. I was taking the day off from work anyway since it was (or would have been) my dad’s birthday, so since I had time during the afternoon and it fit in to the Mayor’s schedule, it was set. When I told my mom this morning, she said, “That’s nice that you’re doing it today. Dad would have liked it.”

I Have No Idea What the Fuck is Going On (Thoughts on Family and Cancer)

I’ve had that title in my head for a future blog post once all was said and done, though originally it was going to be called “The Worst Fucking Cancer Advice You’re Ever Going to Hear.” The irony being, my dad would get upset if you ever said that something “sucked.”

I never really spoke much about my father having cancer. For someone who is on teh Facebooks and teh Twitters more than anyone should be, sharing every idiotic pondering that crosses his mind, I’m not one for sharing personal aspects of my life. As it is, I had originally only e-mailed a few close friends when my father was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, just to say that he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and that I didn’t really want to talk aboot it otherwise.

But now that he’s passed and my family is finishing the mourning stage over two refrigerators full of leftovers, I thought I’d share some…well, thoughts…that have crossed my mind as of late.

Lynn Krogh: An Ode to “the Boss”

With young republicans from all over the state of New York traveling to Corning this weekend for our biennial convention, I wanted to take a few moments to salute our outgoing state chair Lynn Krogh.

My relationship with Lynn started of on an odd foot. It wasn’t on the campaign trail or phone banking. It was before we even met and I almost set off a turf war between rival gangs. One day in 2008, I got an e-mail from the “New York City YRs” from their President who has been reading my blog and asked if I’d like to present an award to Rep. Pete King. Of course I said yes. He’s my guy, we Irish have to stick together, plus it’s kinda cool that someone I never met was such a fan of mine he was inviting me to his awards dinner because he enjoyed my blog.

So, I send out a notification on my mailing list. The first response was from…let’s just call him Guy Incognito (incase anyone from the Town of Hempstead is reading). Guy told me that this NYYRC wasn’t the officially licensed YRs and was a rogue organization…which I thought was ridiculous. How many YRs can there possibly be in NYC to have rival gangs? This was obviously just hazing the new guy.
