Mario’s Kid to NY Teacher’s Unions: Suck It!

Yes, I’m stealing “Mario’s Kid” from the fake Shelly Silver account on Twitter. It cracks me up.

Anyway, Governor Cuomo is announcing his budget for New York tomorrow and apparently he’s using it to push for education reform, specifically the arcane concept of tying teachers pay to job performance. How? By tying “…4 percent state aid increases promised to the districts in last year’s budget — some $800 million — to adoption of the teacher-evaluation system developed by the state Education Department, which has been blocked from city schools by a teachers-union lawsuit.”

Long story short, if the districts don’t comply, they don’t get the money.

I know the teachers union hate anything that requires their members to have to do their jobs well in order to keep them, and the Democrat controlled Assembly hates it because the unions give them lots of money so they hate what they’re told to hate. But whenever I hear “performance pay” come up, I think back to high school Chemistry.

On Taxes, Millionaires, and the NY Republican Party

To my left, you see a picture of Governor Andrew Cuomo sandwiched by two freshman Republican legislators: Sen. Lee Zeldin and Asm. Dean Murray (or, “The Legion of Doom” as I’ve taken to calling them). The picture is from today’s bill signing of the Governor’s Tax Reform plan which, among other things, reduced the MTA Tax by 80% and temporarily increasing taxes on people making more than two million dollars a year.

There have been quite a few from the right criticizing the Republicans in Albany for selling out and agreeing to a tax hike, giving in to the Occupy Wall Street crowd, not having back bone, and so on. While I agree that in a perfect world everyone would agree with us and we’d get everything we want, I just want to bring up three key points:

Rick Lazio: Reminding us that Andrew Cuomo IS Albany

The benefit of finally having a set nominee for Governor in New York is that Rick Lazio can now focus all of his energy comparing and contrasting himself to the Democrat nominee Andrew Cuomo. Well, the compare and contrast I’m sure is coming. Right now, it’s feels good just to be on the attack.

While Lazio was making the case other Republicans, Andrew Cuomo was getting away with trying to convince New Yorkers that he was a Republican. Besides fighting the “status quo” of his party controlling every level of Albany politics (and failing at it), he’s also going to cap property taxes, cut spending, and stand up to the unions…which own his party in so many words.

He’s also been able to dance around issues, which Lazio is more than happy to call him out on. Most recently, it was Gov. Patterson’s and his latest tricks to try and get a budget past…

The Status Cuomo

Admittedly, I’ve only paid half attention to Andrew Cuomo finally announcing that he’s running for Governor this weekend. I’m sure a lot of this will get flushed out in a robust debate, but there’s one thing that confuses me…is he running as a Republican?

I know we keep adding candidates for the Republican nomination…but Andrew Cuomo? Maybe I’m wrong, but he says he’s going to shake up the status quo in Albany…where we have a Democrat Governor, Democrat Comptroller, Democrat Attorney General, and the Democrats controlling both the Senate and the Assembly. So, that must mean he’s running as a Republican, right?

Then, he finally announced his policy platform: a two percent property tax cap, a freeze on state workers salaries, tax credits, slashing government agencies by 20%, and supports charter schools, a constitutional convention, and independent commission on redistricting. If all of this sounds familiar, they’re some of the very reasons we elected Ed Mangano and Chris Christie last year…and all of the reasons many of us support Rick Lazio this year.

Can Rick Lazio PLEASE Start Running Against Andrew Cuomo?

Those of you who listen to The Right Hook know that besides being a Rick Lazio supporter, my frustration with the state GOP grows week after week, and the main reason is the debacle the Governor’s race has become.

After Scott Brown’s victory in Massachusetts – where he won a Senate seat held by the Kennedy family since the 50’s – it should have been a no brainer. Brown showed us that a) a Republican can win in a deep “blue state,” and b) the state Attorney General is no longer the heir apparent to state wide races. Rick Lazio could easily be New York’s “Scott Brown” and the day after Brown’s victory was the day to get behind Lazio and start going after Andrew Cuomo full force.

Instead, the party begged the DEMOCRAT Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy into switching parties and running as Governor…even though he has no chance of getting on the ballot.

Which is a shame, because instead of having to waste valuable time and money this year fighting amongst his own party, Lazio could have spent it contrasting between him and his ACTUAL OPPOENENT Andrew Cuomo, as he did yesterday in the Daily News

Rick Lazio for NY…Governor?

Well, New York politics is at least keeping things interesting this week. On the day rumors surfaced that Rudy Giuliani was considering a senate run, two things happened that might help his decision. One was the major terror bust in NYC, reminding us why another strong voice for national security is need on our side. The other was current Senator Kristen Gillibrand being one of seven to vote against cutting off federal funding for ACORN.

Yes, the same ACORN under federal investigation in twelve or so states, and that helps teach pimps how do falsify their mortgage papers.

While this is going on, former Congressman Rick Lazio decided he’s not going to wait for Rudy to make up his mind and will be formally announcing his run for New York Governor next Monday…
