Frank Mir Shoots on Brock Lesnar

Brock Lesnar’s debut UFC fight (and only his second professional fight) ended with him tapping out to a Frank Mir ankle lock. Since then he’s seemed to improve with each fight, with his mugging over Heath Herring and his title victory over former champ Randy Couture. There’s even talk of him training with Couture for his upcoming fight with Mir.

Mir however isn’t sweating it. I mean, how much can one guy improve in a couple of fights? So sayeth the current interim-champion…

“Lets look at Urijah Faber at his fourth or fifth fight. What was he compared to what he is now? If we go to Miguel Torres, if we go to St. Pierre, you can pick the best fighters in the world. How good are they on their fifth fight compared to how good they are now,” asked Mir. “We’re talking about world-class guys. We’re talking BJ Penn’s and stuff. Let’s be realistic – Matt Hughes. Come on. If Brock Lesnar is able to be a world-class mixed martial artist on his fifth fight, that means he’s the best mixed martial artist pound-for-pound that ever came into MMA. That’s a pretty steep statement there. We’re talking you’re up there with Anderson Silva and St. Pierre and Miguel Torres. That’s a pretty long, tall list to be on top of.”

Brock Lesnar and Randy Couture: Training Partners?

So, Brock Lesnar is the UFC heavyweight champion, right? And he’s got the next biggest fight of his career in a few months (probably) against interim champion Frank Mir…who has already beaten him once. Most fighters would look to step up their game, and Lesnar is no different. That’s why he’s going to train with the guy he won the title from, Randy Couture.

Here’s Sherdog with the report:

Don’t be surprised to see Brock Lesnar and Randy Couture back in the cage together this year. This time they’ll be training partners, though.

UFC heavyweight champion Lesnar inquired about a visit to Xtreme Couture Mixed Martial Arts in Las Vegas when he spoke with the UFC Hall of Famer at UFC “Fight for the Troops” on Dec. 10 in Fayetteville, N.C. “I told him that would be fine,” said Couture, who lost his sixth career title to Lesnar at UFC 91 on Nov. 15 in Las Vegas.

Brock Lesnar vs. Frank Mir

Since neither fighter’s last fight lasted long enough for them to get tired let alone injured, methinks we’ll be getting the Brock Lesnar vs. Frank Mir fight sooner rather than later. If I were a betting man, I’d say we’ll see it in April as part of a double main event opposite Anderson Silva vs. Red Shirt guy from the U.S.S. Enterprise.

There are four key components for a mega-fight, and Lesnar vs. Mir meet three out of the four. One of those components is when neither fighter has fought before, and since this would be there second fight, we’ll leave that one unchecked.

As for the other three…

1. A Championship - Brock is the heavyweight champion. Mir is the interim heavyweight champion (stemming from a legal dispute between the UFC and Randy Couture). Both fighters will be looking to unify the titles and determine who the undisputed heavyweight champion is.

What’s Next for the UFC Heavyweight Division?

It was an emotional night in the UFC’s heavyweight division. You had Frank Mir, after having his leg shattered in a motorcycle accident and being told he would never walk again, and after being a day away from leaving the sport in a pain-killer induced hazed, completed his comeback by capturing the interim heavyweight title. When Michael Buffer said the words “new champion” you could see the look on Mir’s face as everything he’s been through all came back to him at that very moment.

Then you had Nogueira, where you almost saw his heart physically breaking after being knocked out for the first time in his career. He almost looked like he realized at that very moment, after being the most decorated heavyweight in the sport, that he’s approaching the end of his fighting career.

It wasn’t all touchy feely, as earlier in the night Cheick Kongo absolutely eviscerated Mostapha al Turk. Note to future Kongo opponents: You shouldn’t knee him in the nuts. His sister kneed him in the nuts once…once.

So where does this leave us?

UFC 92: Predictions

I went one for four in the Ultimate Fighter Finale…though the Vega$ oddsmakers only went 2-5, so it ain’t like I was the only one. Let’s see if I can improve on that…

I’m going to take Forest Griffin to retain the title…but it’s a really tough call because of Rashad Evans’s sudden knockout power. All things being equal, Forest gets the pick just because he’s one of my favourite fighters. It wouldn’t surprise me if this fight went to a decision.

In another close one, I like Frank Mir over Minaturo Nogueira. I think it will all come down to conditioning. Nogueira looked he got gassed easily in his first two UFC fights, and I think the comeback aspect of this fight alone is enough for Mir to come in the best shape he’s ever been in.

UFC92: Don’t Call it a Comeback

I didn’t get into the UFC until after Frank Mir’s motorcycle accident, and the first fight I saw of his was the trainwreck against Brandon Vera. We dubbed the fight “The Truth” vs. “The Fat Bastard.” He was a shell of the fighter that broke Tim Sylvia’s arm, and he knew it himself. He told his wife that he just didn’t have it any more, and of course being supportive like all women are:

“You’re a pussy, a failure as a man, and a bad example to your children.”

That’s my kind of woman! And her motivation must have worked because he’s won his next two fights and has a chance to regain his heavyweight title on the Dec. 27th. Both he and Nogueira have the sickest jitz of any of the heavyweights and are dangerous on the ground.

I still can’t pick a winner.
