365 Days in the Life of Rep. Tom Reed

Most cats didn’t hear of Rep. Tom Reed until the Tickle Me Massa scandal (Google it), but a lot of us were fans of the former Corning Mayor well before that, so there is a great deal of pride to see him getting national attention. Granted the NY-29 might as well be part of Canada as far as us on The L.I. are concerned, but I’m still a fan. :-)

Just in the past few months, Speaker Boehner chose him to be one of the conferee’s of the payroll-tax bill (don’t get me started), and Politico named him runner-up of the Freshman classes “Most Likely to Succeed.”

As his sophomore year starts, Reed recently interviewed with National Journal to reflect back on his time so far in Washington…

Joe Scarborough May be a RINO Squish, but He Makes Excellent Points Here

I enjoy Joe Scarborough much more off of MSNBC. Granted I stopped watching after the network tried holding Sarah Palin as an accessory to murder in Arizona, but there was always a difference between the Joe on MSNBC Joe off. His radio show that was on WABC is actually what I tried to pattern my podcast “The Right Hook” after, and more often than not his Politico column’s have me nodding and saying “word, son!”

This week’s was a perfect example, that I think too many people on our side is going to dismiss since Scarborough is a squishy liberal RINO communist, and even worse…he’s quoting Maureen Dowd’s brother. That’s a shame because they lay out a blueprint the GOP should be listening too. The column goes more into detail, but the bullet points…

What the GOP Can Learn from the WWE’s Zack Ryder (or, “Woo Woo Woo, Newt Gingrich Knows It!”)

I like to look at how non-political entities use social media to see what tricks we can steal. Last night while I was watching former dark horse candidate Newt Gingrich on YouTube while waiting for his debate against Jon Huntsman to be embedded, it came to me that the GOP could really learn a lot from WWE superstar (and the L.I.’s own) Zack Ryder. No, seriously.

Ryder was what cats in the wrestling biz call a “midcard jobber,” who occasionally won a match no one saw so that the same five superstars hogged up all the air time. It’s the political equivalent of a candidate running at 2% in the polls trying trying to grab media attention from the same few more established candidates that get all the air time.

So what did he do? Instead of complaining aboot Triple H, he channeled his drive and creative energy into a weekly YouTube TV series:

I was a John McCain supporter in 2008, so I am the LAST PERSON to criticize anyone for learning and/or changing your mind over four years. But the talk radio pile on of RINO Mitt Romney when they all sung his praises as the 2nd coming of Reagan riding to the rescue on his three legged stool four years ago is just hackery.

What the GOP can learn from the UFC

This was originally writen for TechRepublican.com back in May 2010. I thought I’d share…

I always tell my fellow YRs that they need to lighten up and, for the love of God, have interests outside of politics. The master plan is to get everyone to break the old school Alex P. Keaton style of Young Republicanism. More importantly, having interests outside of politics is great when it comes to breaking the ice and networking. It can’t all be about fighting socialism and getting to the bottom of where the President was really born…KIDDING! That’s sarcasm, folks.

My top non-political interest is mixed martial arts, what most people know as the UFC: Ultimate Fighting Championship. We all get together every month with a case or two of beer and watch guys pummel each other. Yes, it’s as awesome as it sounds. However, besides being one of the fastest growing sports and another excuse for my friends to get together and drink (and this is where I get to the point of why you’re reading this), the UFC is also a highly lucrative private company, and I find myself becoming more and more impressed with how they’ve been utilizing new/social/direct media.

The question is how do we take some of their ideas and interpolate them into a political campaign? There are three things they do specifically that I think can not only be incorporated into a campaign, but done so using minimal resources.
