NY-1 and NY-4: With So Much Drama in the GOP…

This is my first time really paying attention to NY politics, so maybe this is the way it’s usually done and I’m simply naïve to think otherwise. But there were two recent articles about two Long Island congressional races that I feel illustrate why so many people my age don’t waste their time in politics.

Just to put it out there, I’m all in for Randy Altschuler (NY-1) and Frank Scaturro (NY-4), the two candidates the articles happen to favor. I’ve blogged aboot their races here and here. I’m also pro-primary…when there are differences to debate, and when the voters than get to make their choice.

We start in the NY-1, where the establishment’s interference may or may not have affected our Gubernatorial and Senate races as well. Kim Strassel from the Wall Street Journal goes into more detail, but a snippet…

Frank Scaturro: On The Radar with the NRCC

I’ve expressed my preference for Frank Scaturro in the NY-4 both with an endorsement as well as questioning why the local establishment GOP would inexplicably go with someone else. Apparently the NRCC agrees more with me

The National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) has officially announced Frank Scaturro as an ‘On the Radar’ candidate, an important first step in its Young Guns program…The Young Guns program is designed to assist Republican candidates for the U.S. House of Representatives achieve goals and benchmarks throughout the election cycle focused on the fundamentals of a winning campaign. By achieving ‘On the Radar’ status, Scaturro has already proven his ability to build a successful campaign structure and achieve important fundraising goals.

“The NRCC is committed to working with Frank Scaturro as he continues to meet the rigorous goals of the Young Guns program,” said NRCC Chairman Pete Sessions. “Frank is a respected attorney, academic and activist with practical experience in government and civic service. He is ready to create jobs, rein in government spending, and fight for traditional American values”

Great job Frank!

Frank Scaturro vs. the NY-4

I’ve expressed my views on primaries that make sense and on those that don’t, so let’s visit the NY-4, where because of the climate we could have a serious shot in picking off the seat. Which one do you think this is?

Frank Scaturro has been campaigning for Congress in the NY-4 for over a year. He’s raised more than half what any of his rumoured opponents have. He’s the one who has a campaign organization in place, and has been bouncing back between the district and Washington DC…all things that, logically speaking, you need to do (get out early, raise money, campaign structure) if you have a chance in unseating an incumbent who has been there for over a decade.

The establishment seems ready to endorse a local legislator who has done none of those things.

Frank Scaturro for Congress

The NY-4 isn’t known for being a competitive congressional district – the current Democrat has stayed there pretty easily since 1996 – but after recent victories from Ed Mangano, Rob Astorino, and Scott Brown…there are less CD’s that seem out of our grasp of victory. All you need is the right candidate, which we thankfully have here in Nassau County: Frank Scaturro.

Frank is a thirty-eight year old law professor at Hofstra Law, who formerly served as counsel on the Senate Judiciary Committee. Many time primaries turn into who is the “real conservative” and who’s just a poseur. With Frank, he helped Sheppard through the Supreme Court nominations of Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Sam Alito. So yeah, he’s legit.

I’ve also gotten to know Frank personally over the course of the past year. He’s young and energized, and can’t wait to go to Washington to undo some the damage the current Congress has done over the past year and a half. It’s also amazing how many people I bump into from even outside of New York who know him and think what a great Congressman he’ll make. I was in an airport shuttle leaving a hotel in Indiana last summer, and when one of the other passengers heard I was from Long Island, there first question was, “Do you know Frank?”

Granted, I don’t live in the 4th. My home district is the 3rd where we’ve been under the watchful eye of the great Pete King since 1994*…coincidentally enough the last time the Republican’s took over the house. Many people are drawing comparisons between ’94 and this year. Let’s make Frank Scaturro a member of the Class of 2010!

*Make that 1992, as noted in the comment section.
