UFC 118 Predictions: Edgar vs. Penn 2

The UFC is shipping off to Boston this Saturday, headline by a rematch between Frankie Edgar and BJ Penn for the lightweight title. Edgar shocked everyone by defeating the champ in the first place? Can he do it again? More importantly, can I break at least .500 with predictions this time?

PRELIMINARY CARD
I like Joe Lauzon over Gabe Reudiger and Andre Winner over Nik Lentz

UNDERCARD
I’m sure Demian Maia wants to make up for his now infamous loss to Anderson Silva. Because of that, I see him beating Mario Miranda.

It hasn’t been announce as a “#1 Contenders Fight,” but you can easily see the winner of Kenny Florian vs. Gray Maynard fighting the winner of the main event. This fight should be close, but I find it difficult to ever vote against Florian. I see “Ken Flo” earning his THIRD title shot.

UFC 94: Randy Couture Picks a Winner

I know I’ve told you who I think is going to win the Georges St. Pierre vs. BJ Penn fight, but who cares what I think? I’m just some schmuck with a blog. Okay fine. How aboot Randy Couture. Do we care what he thinks?

Here’s how “Captain America” sees things going Saturday night…

“B.J. is one of the most talented guys that I’ve ever been around. He has amazing balance and flexibility. He’s got naturally heavy hands. His submission skills are top notch, but I still think we’ve seen him at 155 fight the best that he has. Although he beat Matt Hughes back in the day at 170, it was more of a style match-up than anything. Conditioning, the body, mindset, everything, it was the best it’s ever been at 155.

“I just don’t see it going well for (Penn) going up to 170, dealing with a guy like Georges who is cutting down a good 15 pounds, probably more, to make the 170-pound limit, who is as dynamic and has the skill sets that Georges has. Although, I think it’s going to be a very interesting fight. I like Georges in a five-round title fight, in that fight.”

Brock Lesnar and Randy Couture: Training Partners?

So, Brock Lesnar is the UFC heavyweight champion, right? And he’s got the next biggest fight of his career in a few months (probably) against interim champion Frank Mir…who has already beaten him once. Most fighters would look to step up their game, and Lesnar is no different. That’s why he’s going to train with the guy he won the title from, Randy Couture.

Here’s Sherdog with the report:

Don’t be surprised to see Brock Lesnar and Randy Couture back in the cage together this year. This time they’ll be training partners, though.

UFC heavyweight champion Lesnar inquired about a visit to Xtreme Couture Mixed Martial Arts in Las Vegas when he spoke with the UFC Hall of Famer at UFC “Fight for the Troops” on Dec. 10 in Fayetteville, N.C. “I told him that would be fine,” said Couture, who lost his sixth career title to Lesnar at UFC 91 on Nov. 15 in Las Vegas.

What’s Next for the UFC Heavyweight Division?

It was an emotional night in the UFC’s heavyweight division. You had Frank Mir, after having his leg shattered in a motorcycle accident and being told he would never walk again, and after being a day away from leaving the sport in a pain-killer induced hazed, completed his comeback by capturing the interim heavyweight title. When Michael Buffer said the words “new champion” you could see the look on Mir’s face as everything he’s been through all came back to him at that very moment.

Then you had Nogueira, where you almost saw his heart physically breaking after being knocked out for the first time in his career. He almost looked like he realized at that very moment, after being the most decorated heavyweight in the sport, that he’s approaching the end of his fighting career.

It wasn’t all touchy feely, as earlier in the night Cheick Kongo absolutely eviscerated Mostapha al Turk. Note to future Kongo opponents: You shouldn’t knee him in the nuts. His sister kneed him in the nuts once…once.

So where does this leave us?

Liddell vs. Couture: A New Hope

Randy Couture vs. Chuck Liddell 4?

Mind you the rumour is coming from the British tabloids, but the story is that Liddell would move up to heavyweight to fight Couture when the UFC debuts in Germany in the summer. The winner would then wrestle for the heavyweight title. As for the rumoured Liddell vs. Anderson Silva fight in February, that’s rumoured to be Silva vs. one of four light heavyweight – Forrest Griffin, Quinton Jackson, Rashad Evans, or Wanderlei Silva – depending on who loses at UFC92.

So what do we think of all this?

This makes the most sense for Chuck Liddell. Anderson Silva would be a train wreck, and I don’t see him fighting for the light heavyweight title anytime soon. I also can’t see Randy Couture fighting less than main event caliber guys. A mega fight between the two, setting up for a bigger megafight where Liddell/Couture would fight Lesnar/Mir/Nogueira, sounds good for everyone involved.

Then you have Anderson Silva. Him fighting any one of those four fighters has me giddy.

Why I think Brock Lesnar will win

I was kibitzing with a co-worker this morning aboot Brock Lesnar vs. Randy Couture, and he was surprised I’m picking Lesnar to win. As far as I’m concerned the fight is a flip of the coin, but what makes me pick Lesnar is that I can’t see Couture finishing Lesnar. Randy doesn’t really have the submissions, and I just can’t see him winning by ref stoppage or TKO.

Lesnar by all accounts should have finished Frank Mir if not for the bad referee call. The with Heath Herring, I still believe he could have finished the fight if he wanted to, but decided instead to beat the crap out of him for fifteen minutes just to prove a point.

If the fight drags out, then it’s definitely advantage Couture, especially if it goes to the judges. Brock’s conditioning hasn’t really been tested yet, and while I have seen him go sixty-minutes in professional wrestling (while not a “sport” is still an impressive feat), I’m not sure how he’ll hold up under twenty-five minutes of MMA.

So my prediction is still Brock Lesnar, however I won’t be upset if I’m wrong.
