What Color is the Sky in Jon Huntsman’s World?

Cats are getting more and more unhinged when you say anything about their candidate or come out in support for anyone who isn’t their candidate, so for the sake of full disclosure, I’m a Gingrich guy. That said, when I read a headline like “Once GOP race settles, Huntsman likes his chances, I’m curious as to what race single digit Jon Huntsman thinks he’s running in.

This isn’t your typical “conservative calls someone RINO” blog post. I could give a damn that he wrote a nice letter to the President, and wanted to give him a chance. I know a lot of those meddling kids who were Students for Daniels switched to Huntsman, and that alone was enough for me to take a second look.

And when I did, I saw a lot of what I liked…

I was a John McCain supporter in 2008, so I am the LAST PERSON to criticize anyone for learning and/or changing your mind over four years. But the talk radio pile on of RINO Mitt Romney when they all sung his praises as the 2nd coming of Reagan riding to the rescue on his three legged stool four years ago is just hackery.

Random Thoughts: The Tea Party and RiNOs Working Together?!?

I know the Tea Partiers can painted as right-wing extremists, but could they be saving the “moderate” wing of the GOP as well? Reihan Salam (one of my favourite new writers on the right) had a great piece in the Daily Beast, and I offer this as food for thought…

So what happened? It’s not just elderly activists at Tea Parties who’ve come to reject President Obama’s approach to economic governance. Many of the college-educated middle-age voters who backed the president in 2008 have turned against him in the intervening months. As the right has focused more narrowly on the growing spending burden and the future tax increases it necessitates, at least some voters who had turned away from the GOP on cultural grounds are giving the party a second chance…

If large numbers of Republicans outside of the South and the Mountain West win seats in 2010, particularly suburban swing seats, there will be a built-in constituency for a more pragmatic brand of center-right politics. The Tea Party could pave the way for a more inclusive political movement that embraces the same fiscal conservatism while leaving aside more polarizing cultural messages, as seen in the Scott Brown campaign. This would parallel the evolution of the antiwar movement between 2003 to 2008, from a fringe movement that alienated moderates to a tendency that came to embrace a large majority of the public.

Kill the RiNO’s? Really?

Yes, Sens. Arlen Specter, Olympia Snowe, and Susan Collins piss me off as much as they do you. They said they were voting for the “stimulus” as a show of bi-partisanship after they got $100 Billion cut out of the bill. We told them the money was going back in once the bill went to committee, and the Dems weren’t going to let anyone read it.

What happened? The Democrats talked amongst themselves, cut out most of what the Republicans had added, put back what most of the Republicans had taken out, and did so in the middle of the night without letting anyone read the bill. I hope Arlen Specter and Susan Collins enjoy the media complimenting how mad bi-partisan they are now, because the minute either one of them had a Democrat challenger next year the media will turn on them in a heart media.

That said, I’d like to introduce a new rule. No screaming “KILL THE RINO” unless you have a valid replacement for them without throwing the seat away. I think people are too quick to institute a zero tolerance policy whenever anyone votes for something we disagree with.

RiNO’s are NOT the Enemy

“What the GOP needs is not a unified message but political entrepreneurs.” - Bill Kristol

I hear a lot of people bitching and complaining offering thought full dissent aboot RiNO’s, which for those of you in the cheap seats it’s an acronym for Republican’s In Name Only. The definition for exactly who is “a RiNO” fluctuates. For some it’s simply a liberal who pretends to be a Republican for the sake of winning an election (think Mike Bloomberg). Others consider a “RiNO” anyone who disagrees with Rush Limbaugh on a single issue.

Some people might even consider me a RiNO, because while I’m anti-bailout and pro-brutalizing terrorists, I also don’t think screaming “they don’t belong here” is an effective way to fight illegal immigration and don’t think the fate of a Republic lies in the hands of whether or not two gay people can form a civil union. Cest la vie.
