Paul Ryan and the Conservative Capital of Wisconsin

The most fascinating state in the great Republican/Conservative/Tea Party uprising of 2010, in my opinion, was Wisconsin. The Badger State I had always felt was pretty liberal, but this year the R’s took over both chambers of local government, plus Gov-elect Scott Walker, Sen-elect Ron Johnson, and Rep-elect Sean Duffy among others. It’s also home to the Ayatollah of fiscal conservatism…Congressman Paul Ryan.

Ryan’s the cat who, while most officials are urged to run far away from any serious entitlement reforms, is intellectually honest over what the problems are and isn’t afraid to say what he thinks the fixes are (see America’s Future, A Roadmap for). The conventional wisdom is that the voters won’t respond positively, but when you look at the gains Republicans made throughout the Midwest (Wisconsin is only where most of my favourites come from), apparently a little honesty can go a long way.

Did Barbra Streisand Just Endorse Paul Ryan?

Ok, so not really and I don’t want to get Paul Ryan in trouble with any of the “real” conservatives, but I still thought this was kinda funny and maybe a little telling. Picture it. Aspen, Colorado. 2010.

The Aspen Ideas Festival, where all the people who are smarter that you and I, are getting together to discuss vital social issues n’ stuff. These are the people who you would think are Obama’s “base,” academic and rich. These are the people who you think would fully embrace Obama’s hard left turn to a more European style economy.

Au contraire, mon frère. Instead, the growing consensus seems to be that he doesn’t have a clue. However, they have someone in mind who does…

Paul Ryan Announces His Candidacy for President

Ok, this may be turning into “Paul Ryan Appreciation Week” here at JohnBrodigan.com, but I can never turn down an article from Reason Magazine.  And  no, he’s not really running for President. I just couldn’t think of a title.

It’s funny, because I was just having a conversation with a friend who agrees with me more than he doesn’t, but said something along the lines of not knowing who is right all the time: conservative or liberals. Obviously I feel the former, but I also joking said that I use libertarians as the tie-breaker, specifically mentioning Below the Beltway and Reason.

So now Ryan is getting covered in the top libertarian magazine, one that advocates many of the ideas conservatives agree with, but from a serious policy angle as opposed to an “Obama sucks” angle. Here’s what they had to say aboot him, or more specifically, hos “Roadmap for America’s Future….”

Can You Hear Paul Ryan Now?

“He is kryptonite to progressives.” – Mary Matalin, on Rep. Paul Ryan

So in the name of bipartisanship (which is a Latin word that means “opposition party bend over and do what you’re told”), the President spoke at the House GOP Retreat and had a televised question and answer session on a Friday afternoon…when most people aren’t paying more attention to happy hour than they are the news. The conventional wisdom is that Obama won that round and made the Republicans look stupid or something.

Here’s my question: if that’s the case, why is it that Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) and his “Roadmap for America’s Future” is the one everyone is talking aboot?

People who have read this blog know that I’m a huge fan of Ryan’s. Over the summer, while the President was lying to the American people that Republican’s didn’t have any ideas, Paul Ryan was holding some nineteen or so (I think) town hall meetings in his congressional district talking about Republican alternatives for health care reform, the budget, energy, etc. Of course he was only given 4:15 to discuss this on MSNBC while they spent over a half an hour discussing whether or not an assclown like Glen Beck is good for the Republican Party (and this was even on “Morning Joe”), but the ideas have always been there and now he has been elevated by the White House and President Obama, people are starting to notice.

[VIDEO]: Paul Ryan and the Road to Recovery

“After two months of drastic interventions, has hope replaced fear, and confidence pushed aside uncertainty?” - Rep. Paul Ryan

I like to keep tabs on some of the younger members of the house caucus, cats like Rep. Aaron Shock of Illinois and Rep. Jason Chaffetz of Utah, just because as we try to introduce conservative principles to a new generation of voters, it helps to have younger faces making the case why we’re right and the Democrat Party is wrong.

(And before the comments start, yes, we all know aboot how George Bush did this and George Bush did that and blah, blah, blah, yackity schmackity.)

At the top of my list, and a guy I wished had run for Minority Leader this year, is Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin. As far as sound fiscal policy goes, his credentials are near impeccable (minus a few recent votes), and being under forty years old (he lists Metallica as one of his favourite bands), he’s the perfect spokesman to usher in a new generation of conservatives.

He introduced some of his alternatives to the Obama budget plan in a recent “Wall Street Journal” editorial. These are some of there alternatives the MSM claims we don’t have…
