UFC 94: Randy Couture Picks a Winner

I know I’ve told you who I think is going to win the Georges St. Pierre vs. BJ Penn fight, but who cares what I think? I’m just some schmuck with a blog. Okay fine. How aboot Randy Couture. Do we care what he thinks?

Here’s how “Captain America” sees things going Saturday night…

“B.J. is one of the most talented guys that I’ve ever been around. He has amazing balance and flexibility. He’s got naturally heavy hands. His submission skills are top notch, but I still think we’ve seen him at 155 fight the best that he has. Although he beat Matt Hughes back in the day at 170, it was more of a style match-up than anything. Conditioning, the body, mindset, everything, it was the best it’s ever been at 155.

“I just don’t see it going well for (Penn) going up to 170, dealing with a guy like Georges who is cutting down a good 15 pounds, probably more, to make the 170-pound limit, who is as dynamic and has the skill sets that Georges has. Although, I think it’s going to be a very interesting fight. I like Georges in a five-round title fight, in that fight.”

UFC94: BJ Penn “I’m going to kick his ass.”

BJ Penn has the chance to make history, or at least UFC history. While a fighter had simultaneously held two titles in two separate weight classes before, it’s yet to be done in the UFC. Penn can be the first if he manages to defeat Georges St. Pierre this Saturday night. You would think that would be his main focus, but surprisingly enough no.

So sayeth The Prodigy…

“[Holding two belts] is a very important accomplishment, but as of now all I’m thinking about is fighting St. Pierre and beating St. Pierre. If I was fighting a lesser opponent and I was going to have the same accomplishment, what would be the point? As far the techniques go, we’re two way different technical fighters. We’re going to find out on Jan. 31 where we match up in what areas. Besides that, I’m just pumped for that day. I’m going to kick his ass.”

UFC94: Georges St. Pierre Ready to Make History

Everyone who has a modicum of interest in mixed martial arts thinks that this weekends Georges St. Pierre vs. BJ Penn fight is going to make history. I think so. You think so. Georges St. Pierre thinks so too?

So sayeth Canada’s greatest export this side of Edge and Christian…

“I’m very glad to fight B.J. Penn. The reason is, right now, I have some challengers. Of course, Thiago Alves is the No. 1 guy right now. I have a lot of other guys in my weight class, but the guy everybody wants to see me fight is B.J. Penn. It’s a fight that’s going to make history. I’m sure B.J. is better than he used to be before, but I am a way, way, way more improved version than I used to be than when I fought B.J. the first time.”

UFC 94: St. Pierre vs. Penn – The Aftermath

Yeah, I know it’s a bit odd to write aboot the aftermath of a PPV four days before it happened, but that’s just how he role here at JBdotC. Besides, there is only one of two outcomes that can happen: either BJ Penn wins, or Georges St. Pierre wins.

Is GSP wins, the aftermath is simple. Both fighters will have the same title they entered the fight with, and will defend it accordingly. For GSP, that most likely means Thiago Alves. For BJ Penn, he has Kenny Florian waiting for him.

But what if BJ leaves as a dual-champion? All the rumors point to him defending his lightweight title first, which would mean a fight against Florian. However that leaves the welterweight division in limbo.

Alves had said he doesn’t want to wait around, and would be looking to fight. The rumor was he would fight Mike Swick and the winner would get the 170 title shot, but Swick had to go get himself injured.

UFC 94: Predictions

Okay, it’s the biggest fight in UFC history…GEORGES ST. PIERRE VS. BJ PENN II! I know you’ve all be sitting at your computers and saying to yourself, “Self, I wonder what John’s predictions are. You know, since they usually suck.” Well the wait is over, because I am ready to predict.

In the main event, I think it’s going to be a war, and I can’t see either fighter being finished so I think it’s going to full five rounds. But in the end…Georges St. Pierre is leaving with the welterweight title. BJ Penn is one of the best, but I think GSP is that much better. Plus, I want the inevitable GSP vs. Anderson Silva fight.

I’ll take Thiago Silva over Lyoto Machida. Machida is one of my least favourite fighters, and while I’m not that familiar with Silva, he’s a former Chute Boxe fighter who now rolls with American Top Team. Silva stays undefeated, and quite possible earns a light heavyweight title shot.

Thiago Alves: #1 Contender

Dana White confirmed what most of us already thought, Thiago Alves is the number one contender for the UFC welterweight championship. White said at a recent Q&A in North Carolina that the American Top Team member would be next in line and fight either Georges St. Pierre or BJ Penn, whoever emerges from their megafight as champion.

Alves is 9-2 in the UFC, with wins against cats like Matt Hughes, Karo Parisyan, and Josh Koscheck. He’s also a monster who excelled at all the different MMA disciplines and his big for a 170 pounder…a lot like a young Georges St. Pierre.

If GSP wins, it makes things simple. You’ll have GSP vs. Alves and Penn vs. Kenny Florian. If BJ wins, the question will be who gets the title shot first. If it were me, I’d give it to Florian. He’s been waiting longer, plus I still want the Alves vs. Diego Sanchez fight.

UPDATE: Scratch the Sanchez fight.
