UFC95 Predictions

The UFC returns to London, England this Saturday, just as I return today to try an impress you with my UFC predictions that lately barely have a 60% rate of accuracy. Regardless, strap yourself in as I wrap my legs around your torso and give to ya, give it ya, give it to ya!

What?

In the main event, it’s a tough call because it’s Diego Sanchez’s first fight at 155 and he’s going to have cut A LOT of weight to get there. But in the end, I still see him getting past Joe Stevenson, in what will probably be a decision.

I see Demian Maia leaving UFC95 with his undefeated streak in tact and a victory over Chael Sonnen. Maia’s next fight will be interesting because, as sick as his jitz is, he still needs a win over a more high profile opponent before a title shot against Anderson Silva.

Diego Sanchez vs. The World

Next Saturday marks Diego Sanchez’s first fight in the lightweight division. He won the first “Ultimate Fighter” at 185, dropped down to 170 for a few years, and now he’s going to see how 155 works out for him. His first opponent is “Ultimate Fighter” season two winner Joe Stevenson.

Sanchez however, had a loftier goal for his first lightweight fight. As he told MMAWeekly Radio

“I asked for Kenny Florian right out of the gate. They gave me Joe Stevenson, but it’s all good. I can consider it a better fight beating Joe Stevenson. It’s the Ultimate Fighter winner, the original Ultimate Fighter winner season 1 versus season 2 Ultimate Fighter winner. We go back to King of the Cage days together and it’s a great fight for me, I’m excited.

Rashad Evans vs. Rampage Jackson: It’s Official-ish

CLICK HERE FOR THE LATEST ON UFC 114

When we last left the UFC, Rashad Evans had just defeated light-heavyweight champion Forest Griffin to win the title. Prior to that, former champion Rampage Jackson (who lost the belt to Forest) won his contest by knocking out Wanderlei Silva so hard that he probably lost Algebra. Common sense would say that Evans vs. Rampage would be the next logical step, especially with Forest having that whole broken hand thing.

Well, it looks like common sense is close to becoming reality. Here are my friends at 6th Round with more:

As we predicted would very well be a potential fight within the first three months of 2009, it is heavily rumored that Rashad Evans will be making his first title defense against Quinton “Rampage” Jackson at UFC 96.

Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio, on March 7 could see these two light-heavyweights go at it, regardless of the fact that they both fought on the same UFC 92 card and activity at 96 would be a sub-nine week return to the Octagon.

Rory Markham: One to Watch in 2009

A welterweight fight has been signed between two UFC newcomers at UFC 95. England’s own Dan Hardy will be taking on former IFL standout Rory Markham as part of the televised portion of the show headlined by Diego Sanchez vs. Joe Stevenson. Easy money says the show will be on SpikeTV, because as much as I’m looking forward to Sanchez/Stevenson, as doesn’t really scream “PPV.”

Markham is actually my fighter to watch in 2009. Most of the Militech Fighting Systems fighters are worth keeping an eye on purely on pedigree, but I was actually a fan of his in the IFL. He’s like a younger, doesn’t piss me off version of Matt Hughes, and while the 170 division is pretty jacked, I fully expect him to be a contender for the title by the end of the year.

UFC 95: Joe Stevenson vs. Diego Sanchez

The UFC is set to return to England with UFC 95, and the main event of Anderson Silva vs. a light-heavyweight to be named later has apparently been changed to a lightweight fight between Joe Stevenson and Diego Sanchez. I can only assume that this is a Spike TV show because “Daddy vs. Nightmare” doesn’t really scream PPV buy rate to me. I still dig the fight though.

This would be Diego’s first lightweight fight since…I think ever. He was a middleweight for the first season of “Ultimate Fighter,” dropped down to welterweight after winning, and other than a rumour aboot him fighting in the Pride Lightweight Grand Prix (back when there was a rumour that there would still be a Pride), 155 is new territory for him.

Next for Anderson Silva…Chuck Liddell?

With potential 185 pound contenders Michael Bisping and Demian Meia possibly not being available until after the next season of “The Ultimate Fighter,” there’s been talk of another fight for Anderson Silva at 205. And with the announcement of UFC 95 in England, the rumours of a potential Anderson Silva vs. Chuck Liddell fight have returned.

Personally, I think this would be a great fight for Silva and a terrible fight for Liddell. Anderson Silva I honestly think is unstoppable. You know there’s going to be an eventual loss that will probably come by way of a sudden knock-out, but for right now there’s no one around I see even posing much of a challenge for him.

Chuck Liddell on the other hand, at least lately, is half the fighter he was. Yes, the fight against Wanderlei Silva was a classic, but it is the “1″ in his 1-3 record for his past four fights with losses to Rampage Jackson, Keith Jardine, and Rashad Evans…where i was expecting Ice Cube and Chris Tucker to run into the Octagon and yell “you just got knocked the fuck out!”

I still want the fight because I’m a huge mark for Anderson, and Dana White obviously wants the fight because he loves money. I just don’t know why “the Iceman” would want it.
