UFC 99: Rich Franklin vs. Wanderlei Silva?

Last week, I had mentioned that Wanderlei Silva was making the move to the middleweight division. I was expecting a warm up fight, building up from there until he earned a title shot against Anderson Silva. What I wasn’t expecting was his next opponent to be Rich Franklin.

And even less explicable, it’s set to be a “catch-weight” fight, even though Franklin had recently moved up to the light heavyweight division, where Silva is…at least for now. When they fight at UFC 99, it looks like it will be at 195 pounds

With both fighters coming off of losses – Franklin to Dan Henderson and Silva to Quinton Jackson, each in the 205-pound division – a catch weight fight doesn’t really damage either’s hopes for a title shot, as each would likely have to win a couple of fights before being considered a contender again.

A catch weight fight is a logical step for Silva to make his transition to the middleweight division a little easier. Walking around at about 208 pounds, he’s never really had to deal much with weight cutting in the past, but will obviously have to in order to compete at middleweight.

Wanderlei Silva Makes it Official

There has been a lot of talk ever since Wanderlei Silva cutting down to 185, pretty much ever since he signed with the UFC. Silva’s always been a smaller light-heavyweight (he “walks around” at 208), so the weight cut seemed to make a lot of sense to everyone except for Wanderlei.

Well, after going 1-3 in the UFC and after Rampage Jackson – for lack of a more eloquent expression – knocked him the fuck out, “the Axe Murder” is ready to make the change and give the middleweight division a shot.

So sayeth Wanderlei…

“Yeah, I could try because every guy in my division have to cut to 205 and my normal is 208. I’m going to test now… I’m going to cut my weight. Maybe I go to fight in my next fight at 185…I’ve been lots and lots of thinking about this now, I see what (UFC president) Dana (White) wants. What he wants (me) to fight, no problem. I talk with (UFC matchmaker) Joe Silva and… say no problem, I’m down for 185? He say, no problem.”

The Future Freaks Wanderlei Silva Out

According to the good folks at MMAWeekly, Wanderlei Silva will be meeting with UFC president (and my hero) Dana White this week to discuss what’s next for him. Possible ideas being bally-hooed around the Internet are a cut down to Middleweight, a rematch against Chuck Liddell, or a fight between the winner of next week’s Rich Franklin vs. Dan Henderson fight.

Wanderlei is in a curious predicament right now. He entered the UFC on a two fight losing streak (against Henderson and Cro Cop). Since then he lost a decision to Chuck Liddell, knocked Keith Jardine the fuck out…but then got knocked the fuck out by Rampage Jackson. So the “Axe Murderer,” who at one point was the most feared fighter in mixed martial arts, is currently 1-4 in his last five fights

What’s next for the UFC light heavyweight division?

Last night gave us too major developments in the light-heavyweight division. The first is obviously Rashad Evans capturing the light-heavyweight title, cementing him as MMA fighter of the year as far as I’m concerned. Yeah, he only fought twice this year – but one of those fights was last night, and the other was a KO of Chuck Liddell. Plus, there’s that whole undefeated thing too.

The other was that Wanderlei Silva got knocked the fuck out, almost to the point I was expecting Ice Cube and Chris Tucker to run into the Octagon. People were wondering how Rampage Jackson was going to look after some personal issues, and if this fight was an indication of what the switch to the Wolf’s Lair team…look out.

As for where the division goes, Rashad Evans vs. Rampage Jackson seems like the most logical step. After that? ::shrugs::

UFC 92: Predictions

I went one for four in the Ultimate Fighter Finale…though the Vega$ oddsmakers only went 2-5, so it ain’t like I was the only one. Let’s see if I can improve on that…

I’m going to take Forest Griffin to retain the title…but it’s a really tough call because of Rashad Evans’s sudden knockout power. All things being equal, Forest gets the pick just because he’s one of my favourite fighters. It wouldn’t surprise me if this fight went to a decision.

In another close one, I like Frank Mir over Minaturo Nogueira. I think it will all come down to conditioning. Nogueira looked he got gassed easily in his first two UFC fights, and I think the comeback aspect of this fight alone is enough for Mir to come in the best shape he’s ever been in.

UFC 92 Predictions: Too Close to Call

It’s a month away from UFC92, and I’m having trouble with my predictions. I feel the fighters are mostly evenly matched, plus I like all of them so I can’t even use that as a tiebreaker.

Forest Griffin and Rashad Evans are a lot more evenly matched then I think most people are giving credit. I’m leaning Forest, but Rashad’s knock out of Chuck Liddell is hard to ignore. Plus had it not been for Tito Ortiz losing a point against Evans, both would have had questionable split-decision losses Tito that many think they should have won.

Frank Mir vs. Minaturo Nogueira is and interesting fight, where you have the two heavyweights with the sickest jiu-jitsu (or “jitz” as the kids say). Nogueira’s two UFC fights haven’t been all that impressive and Mir is just starting to get his groove back after his motorcycle accident (and some think got lucky against Brock Lesnar).

Wanderlei Silva already has two wins over Rampage Jackson from Pride, but is 1-3 in his last four fights…albeit that one win was an absolute decimation of Keith Jardine. Rampage is coming off his loss to Forest and his recent legal/mental drama. What’s the most interesting of the fight is that the winner might be the one to face the winner of Forest/Rashad for the title. The loser could be next for Anderson Silva.

Hmmmmm…
